Loess and paleoenvironments, Soil development in loess, Processes of loess formation, Loess variation across landscapes, Loess stratigraphy.

(5) Participate and pay fee, hotel and domestic flight by cash at the conference in Gorgan. www.loessfest2017.com/showpage.aspx?code=12.

(6) Conference format. On Sunday and Monday (8 and 9th Oct) we will have sessions of papers and posters, with a longer, mid-day break for lunch and two shorter breaks.

(7) Field trips. Three one-day field trips, focusing on loess, paleosols and sand dunes will be run on Tuesday to Thursday (10-12th Oct). The northern Iranian loess paleosol sequences are very valuable archives due to their extraordinary thickness of up to 30 m on the foothills of the Alborz-Mountains and about 60 m in the so called Northern Iranian Loess-Plateau. Furthermore, Northern Iranian loess provides a missing link for the correlation between Central Asian and European loess archives.
Tuesday's trip will focus on loess deposits of the subhumid northern foot slopes of Alborz Mountains. Several loess exposures, up to 30 m thick and located near the cities of Gorgan and Neka, will be visited. The sections host strongly developed reddish-brown argillic palaeosols as well as moderately to weakly developed brownish palaeosol horizons. The loess and palesosols group into a last interglacial/early last glacial pedocomplex (MIS 5) and a sequence of last Middle Pleniglacial to Late Pleniglacial (MIS 3 and MIS 2) paleosols. Formation of the modern soil will be discussed as well.
Wednesday’s trip will lead to sand dunes near Alma Gol Lake and loess hills at Aghband. Aghband is located in the northern Iranian loess plateau, a semi-arid region with 200-350 mm annual precipitation. The loess deposits at Aghband reach a thickness of > 60 meters and yields a climate archive reaching from MIS 7 to MIS 2.
Thursday’s trip will focus on fascinating scenic loess hills in the eastern Iranian loess plateau and loess-paleosol sequences at the Mobarakabad section in southern Iranian loess plateau (northern foot slopes of the Alborz Mountains).

Dear Members,

We want to start formalizing session proposals to the Organizing Committee of the next INQUA Congress in Ireland. If you an idea for an innovative session that’s interesting for the community and pushes the edges of what currently constitutes Quaternary research, please send Mauro and me a short description of your plans.

Kind regards, Freek Busschers and Mauro Coltorti.

INQUA Commission on Stratigraphy and Chronology

Dear Members,

This is to inform members of the Quaternary Community that Wim Westerhoff, the past President of the INQUA - Section for Quaternary Stratigraphy of Europe (SEQS) died on Saturday, 13th May, 2017. Wim was active in the community for many years, bringing his deep knowledge of the Quaternary of the Netherlands and nearby regions. He promoted many successful meetings in various parts of Europe, always making great efforts to support the participation of young researchers and colleagues from low budget countries. He was always a very positive, friendly and supportive person. He will be greatly missed by all of us who knew and worked with him.
